IDQ Webinars: with Kelle O'Neal
IAIDQ Session Summary and Contest of the Month
If you missed IAIDQ’s July Webinar on July 18th, 2012, here’s a summary of what was covered by Kelle O’Neal, who shared with us methods and tools for “Aligning the Organization for Data Governance Success”.
We all know that successful data governance programs need to involve both IT and business, but it can be difficult to get these parties engaged and on the same page. This IDQ webinar shared methods to identify these stakeholders, align them by creating common definitions of success across business and IT, sustain alignment through metrics, and maintain alignment through a well -defined communication plan.
Kelle introduced a workshop format to help bring stakeholders together and identify their common goals and concerns. By listening to stakeholders’ goals and needs, data quality professionals can create a story of how improving the data will help meet their objectives. The speaker further demonstrated how data professionals should create business-oriented metrics that map to their stakeholders’ strategic objectives. Listening to stakeholders’ non-data specific needs can help create metrics that have business value and support and sustain a DG program. At the conclusion of the workshop participants create a communication plan with each stakeholder that shows what needs to be communicated, when, why, where, how, and to whom in terms of data. This way data quality practitioners can create a sense of understanding and momentum with stakeholders, which can be sustained through metrics and continued alignment. Kelle showed how data teams can get different lines of business to understand, articulate and take charge of their role within the data program to create a stronger, more sustainable data governance initiative. Before the workshop, get some assistance estimating the value of good data for your stakeholders (or executives!) by checking out Kelle’s article on IAIDQ’s Website, “Practical Formulas for Estimating the Value of Quality Data”.
