In my April 2005 column we established two definitions, the concept of Information Quality and the function of Information Quality Management.

Information Quality is “consistently meeting all knowledge worker and end-customer expectations” in their information and information services. 

Information Quality Management is “the application of sound quality principles and processes to information as a product of business and manufacturing processes.”


There are four fundamental principles that are characteristic of all valid quality management systems; these principles were first applied to manufacturing quality and are now included in today’s service quality systems such as the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence in Business, Health Care and Education. 

The four fundamental principles of quality management are:

  • Customer Focus
  • Process Improvement
  • Scientific Methods
  • Management Accountability

In this issue we address Principle 3, the application of proven Scientific Methods as tools in the IQ Professional’s tool kit.
